In our agency's experience, successful Shopify stores typically use 15 to 25 apps. The tools we at tante-e install in almost every setup include Pandectes (cookie banner), Pathway Solutions (accounting), Matrixify (data import), Shopify Search & Discovery, and Shopify Translate & Adapt. For revenue growth, leading D2C brands rely on Klaviyo (email/CRM), Reviews.io (reviews), and Gorgias (customer support).

The crucial factor is not the number, but the structure: Which app solves which problem, and in what order is the stack built? This is exactly why we at tante-e use our own framework, which we introduce in this article.

1. The tante-e Tool Stack Framework: How we structure the app stack of successful Shopify stores

The tante-e Tool Stack Framework with all four levels: Operational Engine, Revenue Engine, Experience Engine, and Intelligence Layer

At tante-e, we structure our clients' app stack using our own framework, the Tool Stack. It consists of four interdependent levels.

The foundation is the Operational Engine: everything that needs to run in the background for a store to function, from finance and shipping to warehousing, automation, and external system integrations. If this foundation isn't solid, everything else is of little use.

Building on this, there are two parallel levels. The Revenue Engine includes all apps with a direct impact on revenue: acquisition, conversion, average order value, and customer retention. The Experience Engine covers everything that improves the in-store experience: reviews, search, customer support, returns, and personalization.

At the very top sits the Intelligence Layer: the data and insights that help strategically manage the entire stack, including attribution, profitability, and forecasting.

The most important insight from this framework: The Operational Engine must be in place first. Those who start with Revenue or Experience apps before the foundation is sound are building on shaky ground.

2. Our most important learnings about Shopify apps summarized

More apps are never the solution. This is the Erkenntnis that runs through all our projects. The more apps a store has, the higher the risk of bugs and poor page speed.

The distinction between frontend and backend apps is crucial.

Backend apps run in the background, synchronize data, automate processes, or connect external systems. They are not loaded when someone visits the store and have little impact on performance and display.

Frontend apps are loaded directly in the storefront. Every additional frontend app means more code on page load, slower loading times, and higher susceptibility to errors, especially when multiple apps interact with each other.

Our rule of thumb: First, check if the theme or a native Shopify function solves the problem. If not, custom code is often a more stable choice than an app. Only if both are insufficient is an app the right answer.

You can find more on the topic of Shopify Apps vs. Custom Coding in our blog.

2.1. These Shopify apps usually don't work as an app solution

There are areas where apps seem promising, but in practice, they regularly reach their limits. We encounter three of these particularly often.

Cross-selling in the storefront: Product recommendations and upsell suggestions deeply impact the store's display. Anyone who wants full control over the branding, placement, and behavior of these elements usually won't get far with an app. Our recommendation: if possible, solve it directly in the theme.

Configurators and Bundles: As soon as products have multiple variants, for example, size and color need to be combined, bundle apps quickly reach their limits. For more complex requirements, custom code is almost always more worthwhile. Our collaboration with 1. FC Union Berlin shows how an individual configurator can be implemented.

Example of the 1. FC Union Berlin jersey configurator

Deposit logics: Different deposit amounts for bottles, cans, or crates that need to be processed correctly for accounting: this is a use case that no app fully covers. Custom code is the more reliable solution here.

3. Shopify's own apps 2026: What we recommend and where we are cautious

Not every app from Shopify itself is automatically the best choice. Shopify develops new apps based on the principle: release first, then improve. This means that new Shopify-owned apps often still have gaps or limitations in the first few months.

However, these native Shopify apps are used in almost every one of our setups:

Shopify Flow: Automation without developers

Shopify Flow is the recommended solution for process automation on Shopify. If-then logic, automatic tagging rules, notifications for specific events: Flow covers a wide range of applications and significantly saves time in everyday use.

Shopify Checkout Blocks: More control at checkout

Shopify Checkout Blocks enables targeted checkout customizations without custom code. Hiding or prioritizing payment methods, controlling shipping methods, integrating address validation: these are interventions with a direct impact on conversion. Important: Most relevant features are only available with Shopify Plus.

Shopify Bundles: Increase AOV, but with limitations

For shops with a manageable product range and few variants, Shopify Bundles is a solid solution for increasing the average order value. However, those in the fashion sector or wanting to combine products with multiple variant dimensions quickly reach the app's limits. In these cases, custom code is the better choice.

Shopify Translate & Adapt: Multilingualism solved natively

In combination with Shopify Markets, Shopify Translate & Adapt is the recommended solution for internationalization on Shopify. Up to two languages are automatically translated, the app integrates well into the SEO structure, and grows with the requirements of Shopify Markets.

You can find our detailed comparison of translation apps for Shopify in the tante-e blog.

Shopify Knowledge Base & SimGym: Exciting, but still early

We have two new AI-based Shopify apps on our watchlist. The Shopify Knowledge Base automatically creates FAQs on product pages and is interesting for GEO optimization, i.e., visibility in AI systems like ChatGPT or Perplexity. Shopify SimGym simulates AI-based buyer profiles and allows testing changes to the shop beforehand. Both apps are conceptually exciting but still in an early stage. We are monitoring them but do not yet recommend them without reservation.

4. Operational Engine: The Shopify apps we install in almost every store

The Operational Engine is the foundation of every successful Shopify store. We first ensure that data protection, accounting, and legal compliance are in place before we deal with revenue growth or customer experience. We install these apps in almost every setup:

Shopify Search & Discovery: Filters and search without custom code

Shopify Search & Discovery is the first choice for search and filter functions for most shops. The app enables proactive search recommendations, complex filters on category pages, and product recommendations, without a single line of code. For shops with a very large product range, there are more powerful alternatives. For a start, Search & Discovery is usually completely sufficient.

In German-speaking countries, there's no getting around a legally compliant cookie banner. Pandectes is designed to meet the requirements of the German and European markets, is compatible with all common tracking scripts, and does not significantly impact page speed. It also doesn't falsify analytics data, which is a common problem with poorly implemented cookie solutions.

All in One Accessibility: Accessibility as standard

With the European Accessibility Act, which will gradually come into force from 2025, accessibility for online shops becomes mandatory. All in One Accessibility is not a substitute for a full accessibility audit, but it is a solid starting point for any Shopify store.

Pathway Solutions: Accounting and invoices for the German market

Pathway Solutions, specifically the Invoice Printer Pro with DATEV export, is the recommended solution for automated invoicing and accounting on Shopify in German-speaking countries. The app is tailored to local legal requirements and significantly reduces manual work for tax advisors.

More on how to properly handle accounting on Shopify can be found in our blog.

Matrixify: Cleanly import and export bulk data

Matrixify is the recommended Shopify app for structured import and export of larger data volumes via CSV files. Particularly valuable for migrations, managing metafields, or when data from external systems needs to be imported.

5. Revenue Engine: Shopify Apps with direct revenue impact

Apps in the Revenue Engine directly influence acquisition, conversion, average order value, and customer retention. Which tools are useful here depends on a brand's individual situation. Nevertheless, there are solutions we consistently see in successful Shopify stores.

Klaviyo: The CRM for D2C Brands on Shopify

Klaviyo is the most used marketing platform among successful D2C brands on Shopify. It has long been more than just an email tool: Klaviyo covers email, SMS, WhatsApp, and its own Customer Support Hub. Its particular strength lies in its deep integration with Shopify and the broad app ecosystem that feeds into Klaviyo. This enables precise segmentation and automated flows based on all available customer data. Many shops start with Shopify Mail, Brevo, or Omnisend. As their customer base grows, most successful brands eventually switch to Klaviyo.

Chatarmin: WhatsApp as a Serious Marketing Channel

Chatarmin is the tool we recommend for WhatsApp marketing on Shopify. WhatsApp is still underestimated in German-speaking e-commerce but offers brands with strong community ties open rates that other channels rarely achieve.

memberr vs. Loyalty Lion: Cashback or Points?

Loyalty programs increase Customer Lifetime Value, but the model must fit the brand.

Loyalty Lion is the established solution for classic points programs and is used by many well-known brands. The disadvantage: It is comparatively expensive.

memberr takes a different approach: Instead of points, customers receive real monetary value in the form of shop credit. This reduces friction because no points system needs to be understood, and in practice, it shows good results for Customer Lifetime Value and Cost per Order.

Further tips and app recommendations for Loyalty Programs on Shopify can be found here.

Unzer: White-Label Invoice Purchase

Invoice purchase is one of the most popular payment methods in German-speaking countries. Unzer offers invoice and installment purchases as a white-label solution under the brand's own name, without customers having to create an account or log in. The only input required is a birth date. This significantly reduces the abandonment rate at checkout.

Shopify Functions: Discount Logics That Apps Cannot Map

For complex discount structures, such as influencer codes that should be visible directly on the category page, or tiered discounts with multiple conditions, Shopify Functions is the right answer. It is not an app in the traditional sense, but rather a Shopify-native functionality for individual programming of backend logics.

6. Experience Engine: Shopify Apps for Better Customer Experience

The Experience Engine encompasses everything that helps visitors find the right product, build trust, and have a good post-purchase experience. The impact on sales is more indirect than in the Revenue Engine but no less relevant.

Reviews.io: Reviews as Data Generator

Reviews.io is more than just a review app. Those who use it correctly leverage it as a tool for generating User Generated Content and overcoming purchasing barriers. Instead of just asking for star ratings, sub-questions can be posed that specifically address USPs or known objections. A fashion shop can ask about the fit to improve size advice. The data can be directly synchronized with Klaviyo, enabling automated responses to negative reviews. Furthermore, rich review content strengthens GEO optimization: AI systems read product pages and derive context from reviews.

KNO Post Purchase Surveys: Strategically Utilizing Customer Feedback

KNO Post Purchase Surveys is the recommended solution for structured customer feedback directly after purchase on Shopify. Especially in times when tracking data is becoming increasingly incomplete, qualitative surveys are a valuable addition to understand how customers arrived at the shop and what motivated their purchase.

Gorgias: Customer Support with Less Effort

Gorgias is the leading customer support app for Shopify. It bundles all support channels into a central helpdesk and enables intelligent automation rules. Customers can view order information, adjust delivery addresses, or track shipments without manual intervention from support. Anyone looking to build professional customer support efficiently can hardly avoid Gorgias.

8returns: The Returns Portal for the DACH Region

8returns is the established solution for professional returns management in the German-speaking Shopify ecosystem. The app is designed for the requirements of the DACH market, integrates well into existing logistics processes, and significantly improves the post-purchase customer experience. Particularly relevant for shops in the fashion and lifestyle sectors.

7. Intelligence Layer: Shopify Analytics Apps for Strategic Decisions

The Intelligence Layer provides the data to strategically manage the entire stack. These tools are only worthwhile once a shop reaches a certain size. If you are growing and realize that Shopify Analytics alone is no longer sufficient, you should keep them on your radar.

Klar Analytics: Profitability Instead of Just Revenue

Klar is the analytics solution that many leading Shopify brands in German-speaking countries rely on. The difference to simple reporting tools: Klar not only shows revenue and order numbers but also helps to understand what truly remains after deducting discounts, returns, shipping costs, and advertising expenses. Multi-touch attribution and cohort analyses help to better allocate budgets and identify profitable channels.

Fabrikatör: Forecasting and Inventory Control

Out-of-stock for bestsellers is one of the most expensive problems in e-commerce. Fabrikatör analyzes sales data and provides concrete recommendations on when and in what quantities products should be reordered. Especially in times of unreliable supply chains, proactive planning is no longer a luxury. Another option in this area is Voids, which follows a similar approach.

8. Conclusion

What distinguishes successful Shopify stores is not the number of installed apps, but the clarity about which app serves which purpose and in what order the stack is built.

Before you install another app, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Which engine does it belong to? Operational, Revenue, Experience, or Intelligence? If the Operational Engine isn't established yet, everything else is premature.
  2. What specific problem does it solve? If you can't answer it in one sentence, you probably don't need the app.
  3. Frontend or Backend? For frontend apps, a second look is worthwhile: Could the theme or custom code solve the problem more stably?

The 22 apps in this article are a guide based on what we consistently observe in practice with scaling brands. Which ones suit your shop depends on the industry, size, and growth phase. The framework helps you make the right choice.
